Description

This is a foundational course that covers concepts in Earth and Space Science, Life Science, and Physical Science through scientific inquiry. Students engage in scientific learning through observing, interacting with materials, and asking questions as they explore new scientific concepts. In Earth and Space Science, students learn about weather, rocks and soil, and the Sun's energy. Life Science covers the human body, the basic needs of plants and animals, and life cycles. In Physical Science, students learn about the properties of objects, states and changes of materials, changes in motion, and forms of energy.

Module 1: Observable Properties

-Color, shape, texture, length, weight, and size of objects

-Magnetism, attraction, and repelling of objects

-Temperature

-Use scientific tools

-Observations vs. inferences

-Investigations to solve problems

-Asking questions about the natural world

Module 2: Changes

-States of matter (solid, liquid, gas)

-States of water

-Evaporation

-Changes in materials

-Changes caused by heating or cooling

-Volume of containers of various shapes and sizes

-Repeated trials of investigations

Module 3: Energy and Motion

-Ways people use electricity

-Effects of pushes and pulls

-Changes in motion based on force

Module 4: Rocks and Soil

-Earth is made from rocks of many hapes and sizes

-Use tools to observe rocks

-How soil is formed and what it is made from

-Types of soil (sand, silt, and clay)

-Ability of soil to retain water or grow plants

-Observations vs. inferences

-Investigations to solve problems

-Asking questions about the natural world

Module 5: Weather

-Weather Patterns

-Temperature changes throughout the day

-Direct and indirect sunlight's effect on land, air, and water

-Build a model to represent direct and indirect sunlight

-Wind and air's effect on Earth's surface

-Severe weather and preparation for severe weather

Module 6: Living Things

-Basic needs of humans, plants, and animals

-Habitats of living things

-Human body parts and their functions (brain, heart, lungs, stomach, muscles, and skeleton)

Module 6: Living Things

-Plant and animal life cycles

-Seed dispersal
